Source: “Offensive comment.” Bucks County Courier Times. Tuesday 6 Aug. 2013. ‹http://www.buckscountycouriertimes.com/news/communities/hamptons/offensive-comment/article_e72e5161-2c72-5b2d-8441-0465999f97c9.html›
It was recently brought to my attention by friends from Northampton that at the July 24th board of supervisors meeting, Joe Scott, a Republican Committee member, referred to Supervisor Jim Cunningham as making “retarded” facial expressions.
As a parent of a special needs child and a coach for the past 19 years of individuals with special needs, I find this remark to be highly insensitive and offensive.
I am director for the Miracle League of Bucks County, which has been the beneficiary of the generosity and hard work of many residents and the board of supervisors of Northampton Township, who for three years worked very hard raising funds and making it possible for a special “Field of Dreams” to be built in Northampton Township where these young children and adults can enjoy such sports as baseball and soccer.
I find it reprehensible that anyone would use that word in a public forum. Mr. Scott mentioned in his comments that he has three children who have played many sports in this township. Perhaps Mr. Scott would like to spend some time with our athletes to see the passion they bring to the field every week and reconsider his comments.
I hope that the township will either delete the word in Mr. Scott’s comments on-line or remove the video altogether so no one else has to be exposed to this kind of unnecessary and offensive language.
